Chicago is an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The group came to be in 1967, dubbing themselves a 'rock and roll band with horns' that began with a political agenda and more experimental structure than the softer Chicago sound known worldwide today.
Though still active today, the band's most prominent and essential years were between the 1970's-1980's, second only to The Beach Boys in singles and album chart success. Some of their most popular work includes high-charting releases such as the singles 'Make Me Smile', '25 or 6 to 4', 'Travel Suite', 'Saturday in the Park', and 'Baby What A Big Surprise'. A peculiar aspect about Chicago's discography is that almost all of their albums follow a pattern of the group name 'Chicago' followed by a roman numeral, establishing the said record's chronological place in the outfit's canon. The only exceptions to this rule are the 1971 live album, 'Chicago at Carnegie Hall', 'Hot Streets', and Chicago 13, which exchanged Arabic numbers for the usual Roman numerals. The group experienced the death of original lead-guitarist Terry Kath quite early in the band's career, and this marked a notable transition for the group. As the 80's grew, Chicago was represented by a more supple sound, issuing several signature hit ballads. As the 90's and 2000's came to, Chicago continued playing and releasing music with success despite lineup changes now and again. As of today, the celebrated group has collectively accomplished a great deal, with five number-one albums and 21 top-ten singles under their belt. On April 8, 2016, Chicago was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
